Genus Furcaspis

Lindinger, 1908

Appearance in life
Scale cover of adult female circular, with central exuviae. Scale cover of immature male similar to female but smaller, elongate, with apical exuviae.

Morphology
Adult female not pupillarial; body pyriform; prosoma membranous, pygidium with pattern of sclerotization. Pygidium with 3 pairs of well-developed unilobulate lobes; fourth lobes represented by sclerotized spurs; margin immediately anterior to fourth lobes usually sclerotized. Lobes parallel with longitudinal axis, only slightly graduated in size; median lobes each normally longer than wide, heavily sclerotized. Second and third lobes well sclerotized; small paraphyses or intersegmental scleroses present between median and second and second and third lobes, each paraphysis usually shorter than median lobe; paraphyses absent from anterior to third lobes. Plates as long as or slightly longer than lobes, with unusual apices that appear to be chelate (tip with two opposing processes that look like a claw); 2 present between median lobes, 2 between median and second lobes, 3 between second and third lobes; a few sometimes present between third and fourth lobes; plates absent from anterior to fourth lobes. Anus oval, about same size as median lobe, situated at about the posterior third of length of pygidium from its apex; vulva situated at about anterior third of pygidium. Dorsal macroducts usually few, very slender, quite long, with minute orifices; usually 2 marginal ducts between median lobes, 1 between median and second lobes, 1 between second and third lobes; submarginal ducts usually arranged with only a slight suggestion of a series on segment VIII and series or poriferous furrows between segments VIII and VII and VII and VI on each side. Prepygidial marginal ducts absent. Perivulvar pores present in 4-5 groups, or absent. Stigmatic disc pores present by anterior spiracle; antennae situated quite far apart, each bearing 2-4 setae.
