Genus Lopholeucaspis

Balachowsky, 1953

Appearance in life
Scale cover of adult female elongate and narrow, covered with more or less crumbly, white or grey wax, with apical exuviae. Scale cover of immature male similar to that of female but smaller.

Morphology
Adult female pupillarial; body elongate fusiform, membranous except for small sclerotized patches on the pygidial dorsum; free abdominal segments only slightly lobed laterally; head elongate anterior to the mouthparts. Pygidium rounded, with 2 pairs of well-developed, conical lobes, median lobes separated by a good space; pygidial plates present, slender and apically fimbriate, as long as or longer than the lobes, two between median lobes and two between each median and second lobe; shorter, broader plates present lateral to each second lobe, becoming more tubercular towards base of pygidium. Ducts present, small, each orifice with a sclerotized rim, those on dorsum of pygidium scattered, slightly larger than ventral microducts; abdominal disc pores present in five perivulvar groups, the median and anterolateral groups often united, supplementary submarginal groups present on either side of each of the two segments anterior to the pygidium; anus situated towards base of pygidium. Preygidium with a marginal/submarginal row of apically truncated duct tubercles on either side, reaching as far forward as the anterior end of the mouthparts, with microducts interspersed with the tubercles; stigmatic disc pores loosely clustered by anterior spiracles only; antennae each with 3-5 setae, far removed from anterior end of body.

Second instar female similar in shape to adult female. Pygidium with two pairs of short, broad lobes, each with a deep notch on either side, the base of each lobe extending to form a sclerotized wedge shape on the venter of the pygidium. Short, broad, fimbriate plates present, two between median lobes and two between median and second lobes on either side; a series of similar plates present lateral to each second lobe, becoming reduced towards base of pygidium, giving way to a row of duct tubercles extending onto the prosoma on either side. Macroducts not reduced in size, present marginally and dorsally. Duct tubercles present on thorax and abdomen. Exuviae enlarged, highly convex and heavily sclerotized.
