Appearance in life
Scale cover of adult female elongate-oval, slightly to moderately convex, light grey to yellowish-brown, with subcentral to submarginal exuviae. Scale cover of immature male slightly elongate oval, with terminal exuviae.
Morphology
Adult female pupillarial; body pyriform to expanded pyriform, usually entirely membranous except for pygidium. Pygidium lightly sclerotized at least marginally and around anus. Pygidium with slight indications of 2 pairs of unilobulate lobes (occasionally only median lobes). Lobes rounded or slightly pointed, moderately sclerotized. Paraphyses absent. Plates, if present, few and very small. Anus circular or oval to quadrate-oval, same size or larger than median lobe, situated between centre and posterior quarter of pygidium; vulva situated near centre of pygidium. Ducts with oval orifices; dorsal macroducts quite short and slender; 1 marginal duct sometimes present between median lobes, 1 between median and second lobes, and 2 - 4 anterior to second lobe on either side. Submarginal ducts, if present, very few, not arranged any obvious rows or series, not present anterior to segment IV. Prepygidial marginal ducts and stigmatic disc pores present or absent; perivulvar pores absent. Antennae situated quite near mid-line, each bearing one seta and sometimes with a sclerotized spur.
Second instar female similar in shape to adult female. Pygidium with 3 pairs of well-developed lobes, each notched on the outer margin, and a sclerotized marginal area suggesting a fourth lobe. Short, fringed plates present between the lobes, 2 between median lobes, 2 between median and second lobes, 2 between second and third lobes, and 3 between third and fourth lobes on either side. Paraphyses absent. Dorsal macroducts present in a marginal zone, short and slender, may extend anteriorly from pygidium onto abdominal segment III. Duct tubercles absent. Exuviae enlarged and quite thickly sclerotized.
