Appearance in life
Scale cover of adult female elongate-oval, seed-like, convex but compressed at tip, brown, sometimes covered with cottony white secretion; first instar exuviae terminal (Dekle, 1976). Scale cover of immature male white, elongate, with terminal exuviae.
Morphology
Adult female pupillarial; body elongate-oval, membranous except for slight sclerotization of pygidium and venter of abdominal segments, and heavily sclerotized ring around anus. Pygidium with a characteristic fringe of low, rounded lobes, from among which a number of longer, parallel-sided, bluntly tipped processes radiate; usually several small lobes separate the longer processes from each other. Anus situated near centre of pygidium. A few slender, minute ducts present along margin of pygidium, apparently opening through the lobes; 3 patches of small, short ducts present along lateral margin of body; perivulvar pores absent.
Second instar female heavily sclerotized both dorsally and ventrally, enlarged, convex and elongate-oval like adult female; pygidium without lobes, plates, macroducts or duct tubercles; dorsum of pygidium forms a valve that opens along the posterior margin to permit escape of the young.
